Excel templates, are you using them yet?

by Mike Lewis

Hey everybody,

Let me start by wishing everyone a happy new year! I hope everyone is well rested and ready to get 2011 off to a great start. For my first post of the new year, I would like to bring up a feature that we have been offering for quite some time here at Ad-Juster, but which many of you may not even know existed. Its our Excel Template engine.

When we first started Ad-Juster, way back in 2007, we had designed 2 basic report formats: one in HTML for viewing, and one in CSV for uploading into other systems as well as for use inside of a spreadsheet program like Excel. It didn't take long to realize that there was just too much data for HTML to be an effective presentation tool. For one, most browsers when confronted with that much data became extremely slow and virtually unusable. Second, the HTML was very difficult to manipulate, sort, and filter, which made it very difficult to quickly get to the information of interest. Today, nearly all of our reports which we generate are CSV files. Of course, CSV files, even when opened in Excel, leave a lot to be desired from the perspective of creating end user reports that will be given to sales, finance, and ad operations personnel.

In order to strike a balance, we stopped to take a look at what some of our customers where doing with their CSV reports once they received them. It turned out that quite a few of you were dropping them into excel spreadsheets and using VLOOKUP's to populate better formatted tabs in that same spreadsheet. This extra step of "manual processing" to create an end product gave us an idea to simplify things. What if Ad-Juster could just populate the current up to date data into the formatted tab in the spreadsheet and be done with it?

That is exactly what we did.

Ask us today about how we can take your formatted Excel files and convert them into templates which will be uploaded into your account. Once this process is done, you will be able to select that template as your report type when creating a new Ad-Juster report. All of the filtering mechanisms already available to you will continue to work with the new template format as well. This will allow you to create custom directed reports filtered by Sales Rep or Trafficking Team member using their required report format.

We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Best Regards,

Mike Lewis
